The Australia eBay Site is a Favorite Down UnderIt hasn’t taken Australia long to fall in love with the international online auction site eBay. With the launch of the Australia eBay site in 1999, it has become one of Australia's leading online shopping destinations, with over half a million items listed every day, and also a household word. Australians aren’t the only ones searching for bargains, eBay provides an international platform where practically anyone can trade practically anything. It is very easy for anybody to search eBay for that special something. From used cameras, sports memorabilia or Australiana, anything is up for grabs. Buying and selling eBay items can be achieved by anybody. The Way It WasBefore eBay launched in Australia, the primary way Australians traded their second-hand goods was through a weekly newspaper called The Trading Post. Published nationally every Wednesday, The Trading Post was a very popular read with thousands of listings every week. But the internet, and Pierre Omidyar, who created eBay back in 1995, changed all that. Pierre's idea was that markets could be created, using the Internet, through online auction sites. So to test this theory, he went about building eBay, the worlds first, truly successful, online auction site. Now there are several online auction sites, with eBay being the leader of the pack. Even The Trading Post has now gone online, but competing with such a successful brand, as eBay now is, would be very difficult. eBay is also far reaching, in addition to Australia, they have a local web site presence in 22 other countries, and an amazing 114 million registered members from all around the world. Globally, eBay has more than 25 million items listed for sale at any one time, and an additional 3.5 million items are added every day. No weekly newspaper could ever hope to compete with that reach.
