Animal Collectibles Are a Very Popular Category on eBay

Animals are an important part of the family for many people. Animal collectibles and pet related gifts are a very large market in web auctions like eBay. This includes toys, but also things such as pins, charms, glass figurines and many other pet- and animal-related items. Cat and dog collectibles are particularly popular because these are such popular pets.

Another animal-related category that is very large on eBay is collectible toys. This includes collector items, such as teddy bears or plush toys, but also less valuable toys. Many of these toys can hold sentimental value or might be reminiscent of a family pet. Many classic toys can be found in an online antique auction - after all it was collectibles eBay originally became popular for.

Not All Animal-Related Collectibles on eBay Are As Unassuming

There are some categories of collectible animal items on eBay that are a little more controversial. One such area is “souvenir” animal parts. Items such as shark jaws and shark teeth are being auctioned on eBay, sometimes getting bids in the hundreds of dollars.

These auctions are controversial at times because of varying laws in different countries. Because eBay is an international marketplace, these auctions can sometimes undermine local efforts.

For example, South Africa has made the trade of collectible parts of great white sharks illegal, because they have recently been added to the endangered species list. The sale of collectible endangered shark parts is not illegal in the United States, so eBay does not prohibit their sale on their auction site.

This can lead to sellers in the countries where it is illegal using eBay as a means to sell their animal items. Auctions follow the same supply and demand trends as any other marketplace, so as these animal parts become harder to find, the prices increase. This, in turn, leads to more sellers hoping to profit from these hard-to-find collectibles.
